Cate Carmichael (they/them) Owner & Lead Artist at Spiral FX Emmy Award–Winning Makeup Effects Artist | Prop & Creature Creator | Educator & Advocate Cate Carmichael is an Emmy Award–winning practical makeup effects artist, prop maker, and creature creator with over a decade of experience. As the founder of Spiral FX, Cate blends a love of storytelling and craftsmanship into lifesize props, replicas, and monsters where creepy meets captivating. Their journey began at sixteen through the world of cosplay, where Cate first discovered the thrill of transformation and the joy of building something that made people stop and stare. That spark grew into a passion for film and practical effects that continues to drive their work today. After moving to Vancouver while eight months pregnant, Cate enrolled in Vancouver Film School just six months after welcoming their second child — a testament to their dedication and unshakable creative drive. After school they were pulled into a Vancouver creature shop, Masters FX, where they got to work on a variety of productions like Sonic the Hedgehog, Child's Play 2019 and The Magicians. Moving back to Edmonton in 2020 to be closer to family, Cate saw the value in bringing their skills to the Alberta film industry. They most recently spent three seasons at Deadmonton Haunted House leading the makeup department, developing complex character looks and supporting a talented team of artists in bringing the show to life. With a deep belief in using their craft as a tool for connection, Cate is committed to inclusivity, accessibility, and empowerment within the community. They strive to create spaces where artists of all backgrounds feel seen, supported, and inspired to find their own voice. Through Spiral FX, Cate continues to celebrate the unconventional — proving that monsters, like people, are most powerful when they’re seen for who they truly are.
